Coal mining is absolutely devastating (see http://www.nrdc.org/coal/19c_lands.asp), and suggesting imports from 'poor subsistence farmers' means, for instance, that poor Indonesian farmers will continue burning precious rainforest (making Indonesia the 3rd biggest contributor to C02 emissions) to monocrop palm. Let's really think, this time, about how to get it right. We MUST sever the link between transportation and petroleum, and we must change our mindset to look ahead not just 20 years into the future, but centuries into the future.
